Nhan Dan - In 2008, despite unfavourable climatic conditions, the total rice production by southern localities is over 22 million tonnes, up over 1.5 million tonnes compared to 2007, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The average productivity is 51.9 tonnes of rice a hectare, up 2.36 tonnes a hectare. In the 2008-2009 winter-spring crop, southern localities plan to cultivate on 1,625 million hectares, down nearly 9,400 hectares against the same period last year. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has asked the localities to take the initiative in fighting and controlling diseases and urged farmers to follow the technical instructions to ensure a bumper crop. |
