LONDON (Dow Jones)--The International Grains Council Thursday forecast global 2008 rice imports to rise by about 1% on the year to 29.7 million metric tons.
 
The IGC said the rise is expected despite a likely cut in Indonesia's needs. 
 
This was the IGC's first assessment 2008 rice trade prospects and the organization warned much still depends on the final outcome of 2007-08 crops.

While (rice) supplies are expected to remain tight in a number of key exporters, particularly in South Asia, ample state reserves should again allow Thailand to meet increased demand," said the IGC.
