BANGKOK (Dow Jones)--Thailand Wednesday reiterated its intention to export more than 9 million metric tons of rice this year, with Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Mingkwan Saengsuwan stating the government will not ban rice exports.
The country will produce an estimated 20 million tons of rice this year, which will be adequate for domestic consumption and exports, he added.
Thailand plans to increase its share of the global rice market to more than 40% this year from 31.4% last year, when the country shipped 9.55 million tons overseas.
During the January-March period, the country's rice exports jumped 66% to 3.25 million tons, said Mingkwan.
Officials from the Ministry of Commerce plan to visit China, Hong Kong, Macao and Singapore to assure importers about the country's rice export policy.

The World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations warned Wednesday of a looming food crisis in North Korea because of a poor harvest and escalating food prices.
"The food security situation in the DPRK is clearly bad and getting worse," said Tony Banbury, the agency's regional director for Asia, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation has forecast North Korea would suffer a food shortfall of 1.66 million metric tonnes this year because of last year's heavy floods, which destroyed much of the country's rice and corn harvests.
Meanwhile, prices of staple foods in the capital, Pyongyang, have doubled over the past year and are now at their highest recorded levels since 2004, the WFP said.

MANILA (Dow Jones)--The Philippines will intensify efforts to buy rice from local and global markets in a bid to boost government stocks amid surging prices of the grain, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said Tuesday.
"Supply is secure for the foreseeable future," she said, adding state grains trading firm National Food Authority has already contracted an import volume of 1.2 million metric tons, of which around 50% has arrived.
The NFA is set to hold another tender May 2 to buy more rice from abroad, possibly for shipment between June and August, she said.
Last week, Arroyo said the NFA will hold a tender in May to buy up to 500,000 tons of rice.

BANGKOK (Dow Jones)--Thailand should limit this year's rice export volume to 9 million metric tons to ensure there is no domestic shortage, Chookiat Ophaswongse, president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, said Thursday.
"Over the past few months, rice exports have exceeded 1 million tons a month. If this trend continues, we might end up having a shortage at home," Chookiat told reporters.
He said global rice prices tend to hover around high levels due to strong global demand.
