BANGKOK, July 23 (Reuters) - The price of Thai 100 percent B grade white rice RI-THWHB-P1 rose 2.7 percent on Wednesday from last week, and it could rise further after Vietnam announced plans to impose an export tax on rice, Thai exporters said.
The median price quoted by Bangkok exporters was $750 per tonne, up from last week's $730 per tonne but still well below the record of $1,080 per tonne in April. It was the third straight week that prices rose.
"It's a good sign for Thai rice prices," one exporter said. "Vietnam's tax measure should lift not only its prices but also Thai prices."

MANILA (Dow Jones)--Rice exports from Thailand, the world's top supplier, could reach 10 million metric tons this year, higher than earlier projections of 9.5 million tons, an industry official said Friday.
"We could easily reach 10 million tons," said Chookiat Ophaswongse, president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, noting that Thai exports in the first six months of the year were already close to 6 million tons.
"We've already exported 5.97 million tons in the first half of the year. We only need to export around 700,000 tons a month to reach a total export volume of 10 million tons," said Chookiat.

National Food Authority Administrator Jessup P. Navarro yesterday said that the NFA would release to the market 28 million bags of rice nationwide in the next six months to stabilize supply and preempt any possible increase in prices during the traditional lean months of August and September.
Navarro said that for July and August, the NFA would distribute some 6.5 million bags of rice. The volume would be reduced to five million bags in September when the main harvest starts and would be maintained at three million bags per month as the harvest peaks until December.
According to Navarro, NFA’s increased market injection of from 3,000 to 14,000 bags daily has prevented an abrupt increase in the price of rice even after typhoon Frank hit the country.

Bangkok: Thai rice prices rose 0.7 per cent in the week yesterday, breaking a five-week losing streak, as prices neared the level at which Bangkok has promised to buy paddy from farmers and on demand from Nigeria.
In Vietnam, traders said a four per cent drop in the floor price on Tuesday was not enough to attract foreign buyers who planned to wait until new supply hit the market in July.
The median price of Thai 100 per cent B grade white rice rose to $725 a tonne, up from last week's $720 per tonne, but well below a record high of $1,080 per tonne in April.
