Millers target Eastern Europe for parboiled rice

PARBOILED rice will be exported to Eastern Europe nations from January 2011, an official from the Myanmar Rice Millers Association (MRMA) said last week. “We will produce high quality parboiled rice because we are targeting the European market. We have done this because parboiled rice is more expensive than normal ehmeta rice and has higher margins,” said U Thaung Win, MRMA secretary.

World demand for rice increases, but Vietnam doesn’t have rice to sell

VietNamNet Bridge – Some countries are ready to purchase rice at high prices. However, Vietnamese exporters have no more rice to sell. The demand for rice in the world market has been increasing rapidly towards the end of the year. Rice exporters, including Thailand, Pakistan and India have raised their export prices by at least 30 percent compared to previous month. However, at this moment, when the rice prices reach the highest level in the year, Vietnamese exporters do not have rice to sell. Analysts said that if they had not rushed into exporting rice at low prices earlier this year and wait until the later months , they would made a huge profit. Now, when the world’s prices are increasing sharply, they ran out of rice to sell.

Philippines counts cost as China prepares for typhoon

ILAGAN, Philippines, Oct 19 (Reuters) - A powerful typhoon cleared the Philippines' main island but then stalled as it churned towards China, and authorities said there was no need for Manila to import more rice this year to cover damaged crops. Typhoon Megi, which officials have so far said killed 10 people in the Philippines, was expected to hit China's southern Guangdong province on Friday or Saturday, state news agency Xinhua said.

Selling rice early, Vietnam lost 420 million dollar

VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) late last week had a meeting to review the rice export in the first nine months of 2010. The most important news heard at the meeting was that Vietnam sold most of the rice before, when the price was low. Now when the price keeps increasing, it has nothing to sell. Vietnamese enterprises had signed the contracts on exporting nearly 6.5 million tons of rice. If counting on the volume of 300,000 tons of 15 percent broken rice Vietnam has just sold to Indonesia, the total export volume will be 6.8 million tons, higher than the targeted volume of 6-6.5 million tons set for 2010.

Vietnam to Raise Rice Export Floor Price

HANOI, Oct. 11 (Reuters) - Vietnam will raise the export floor price for 25 percent broken rice to $445 a tonne from $435 from Tuesday, the Vietnam Food Association said, as supply tightens ahead of possible demand from the Philippines and Indonesia. The new floor price will apply to deals with loading in October, the food association said in a statement on Monday, confirming a state media report at the weekend. The minimum price for 5 percent broken rice is unchanged at $475 a tonne. The new floor is imposed on the variety often bought by the Philippines. A state-run newspaper said on Friday the Philippines and Indonesia were looking to buy up to 2.2 million tonnes of rice from Vietnam.
